Independence Discussion
February 27, 2012

People with disabilities face unique challenges everyday.

Independence Inc. held a discussion open to the public Thursday afternoon to discuss the challenges for people in our community with disabilities.Over 25 members from different organizations gathered to talk about what is working in the community and what improvements need to be made.  (Scott Burlingame, Executive Director) "We are constantly trying to be as proactive as possible to really hear the people. This is one of those things we do, to try to bring various people together and not just people in the disability community but pretty much anybody within the community. We listen to them and hear what their suggestions are."Burlingame says with all of the changes taking place in the Minot community, a discussion was the most logical step to take to stay ahead of the game. (Scott Burlingame, Executive Director) "Look, there is a lot of things going on in Minot. Obviously the flood, the new people and all of those things and with that people with disabilities can often times become isolated. It is harder to get out and I think there is a lot of things that can be done in this community to help that. I think there are a lot of answers that can help make that better."

Independence Inc. plans on holding a discussion in each of the 11 counties they serve starting with Ward.
