Partners in Policy Making Informational Meeting
August 20, 2013

Please Join Independence, Inc. for an Informational Meeting on the

 Partners in Policy Making Program

People with disabilities and parents of children with disabilities are invited to join us for an informational meeting about the Partners in Policy Making program on August 27, 2013 from 4:00-5:00. Joining us that day will be Joyce Smith, the Program Coordinator of the North Dakota program.

The Partners in Policymaking Program is a leadership training program designed for adults with disabilities and for parents of children with disabilities. The program is based on the belief that the most effective and enduring public policy decisions are made by the people who need and use services in partnership with elected officials and other policymakers. It is about becoming confident in oneself, competent in the knowledge and information received, and comfortable in sharing the life experiences and expertise one brings to the program.

RSVP are requested but not required. Please call 701-839-4724 with any questions.

ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR 2013-14 SESSION

Partners in Policymaking® Classes in Bismarck

Often described as a life-changing experience for participants, the Partners in Policymaking program is now inviting applications for its leadership training program.  Individuals with disabilities and parents of children with disabilities will be trained at no cost in weekend sessions, starting this fall.  Over the course of eight sessions, they will learn how to become strong, knowledgeable and effective advocates for themselves, their children and others with disabilities.

This groundbreaking program was developed more than 25 years ago. It is now offered in almost every state and other countries.  Graduates report that they gained a greater understanding of disability law and policies, and increased their self confidence in advocating for their needs.  The outcomes of Partners in Policymaking have been documented with quantitative results of increased citizenship activities and qualitative reports of life changes.

There is no cost to individuals selected for the Partners program since it is covered by grant funds.  Overnight hotel accommodations, travel, meals, child care and other needed supports are provided.  All eight sessions will be held at the Comfort Inn in Bismarck.  To make it easier to participate, the two-day meetings are all held on weekends, from October to April.  The first session for the 2013-14 program year is scheduled for the weekend of October 25-26, 2013.  Presenters include local experts and nationally recognized leaders in school inclusion, community organizing and disability issues.

For more information including an application, session dates, or for comments from past participants, visit www.thearcofbismarck.org/partners, e-mail joyce@thearcofbismarck.org, or call toll free at 888-258-7949 or 701-258-7949.
